CrossFit Northlake, like most CrossFit boxes, focuses on more than its high-intensity workouts. It’s about balancing exercise with proper nutrition in a community setting. In fact, the gym states on its website that one aspect of how CrossFit differs from other programs is that the close-knit community will help hold you accountable for the goals you have set for yourself. At CrossFit Northlake, the team will push you out of your comfort zone without compromising your ability to safely conduct the movements used in the workout.
Not ready for CrossFit? The gym also provides a bootcamp-style class that focuses on core strength, endurance and movements to target trouble zones. Additional benefits to a membership are Saturday morning yoga classes and access to additional endurance training.
Don’t let the off-the-beaten-path feel of CrossFit Northlake’s location fool you. Once you pass by the trucking and logistics center on Transport Drive, you’ll find yourself in a small row of office-style buildings. CrossFit Northlake is nestled right in the middle, and parking is not a problem.
When you walk in, it’s likely you’ll be greeted by a few things: music, laughter, crashing weights, and a welcome smile or handshake from members and coaches. Immediately to your right will be a designated room for childcare, and on your left will be a fridge full of pre and post-workout drinks along with cubbies to store your gear.
Move a little further into the building, and you’ll see that CrossFit Northlake shares a space with Ultimate Athlete — a sport-specific strength and conditioning facility. The gym (or “box” as the CrossFit community calls it) has water fountains, restrooms and shower facilities, and a private office for one-on-one consultations with coaches.
CrossFit is all about being comfortable with the uncomfortable. So it’s only fitting that the workouts are designed to push you to your max regardless of what the workout entails. But don’t worry. New members go through a one-on-one consultation with a coach as well as Foundations classes prior to jumping in with the rest of the group. During Foundations, you learn how to safely perform all of the movements used in class, which can range from lunges and air squats to handstands and Olympic lifts. You will also learn that all movements are infinitely scalable. So if you can’t do a pull-up, the coaches will sub something else to help get you there!
Here’s how the CrossFit workouts are structured:
All classes are led by a CrossFit instructor.
You’ll spend roughly 10 minutes going through a group warm-up.
On most days, CrossFit Northlake will program a strength portion of the workout that takes about 15-20 minutes. (An example would be 3 sets of 5 reps performing the front squat.)
The WOD — or workout of the day — can range from as little as 8 minutes or as much as 30 minutes. This is the portion of the workout that will push you with high-intensive movements that work the entire body regardless of the length of time it takes to complete.
Northlake Bootcamp classes follow a similar structure with more emphasis on body-weight movements that are designed to burn fat, build lean muscle and increase endurance. Bootcamp classes are also about 60-minutes long.
CrossFit Northlake and Northlake Bootcamp are all about community. Jason and Amy Bright (along with the rest of the coaches) are welcoming and supportive no matter your current fitness level. The team does a great job of scaling movements to the ability of each individual member, and each member gets their own individual attention throughout the workout.
The studio also works hard to put together fun events for the community. They hold summer barbeques, volunteer together and can be found at a local brewery from time-to-time.
